Speakers

2026 speaker line-up

Two sessions, two routes to the top — doctors who rose to lead national trainee organisations, and clinicians who built companies while working the wards. Our innovation session is chaired by Professor Shafi Ahmed.

Leadership Journeys

Doctors who built their careers in the NHS from their first post and went on to help lead national medical organisations. Each will map the route in full — the roles that built experience and credibility, the skills acquired at every stage and exactly how they were acquired, and how to get into a position to apply for and win a national leadership role — so you leave not just inspired, but knowing the steps you can follow yourself.

Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Session Chair — Innovation & Entrepreneurship

Professor Shafi Ahmed

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust · Co-founder, Medical Realities

Known as the world’s most watched surgeon. In 2014 he livestreamed an operation through Google Glass to some 14,000 students across 132 countries; two years later he performed the world’s first operation streamed live in virtual reality, watched by 55,000 people in 140 countries. Thirty years in NHS practice, and more than 350 keynote addresses across 65 countries.

He holds the Silver Scalpel, awarded to the best surgical trainer in the United Kingdom; was honoured with the Future NHS Award at the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards; was named a HIMSS Global Digital Health Leader; and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for his humanitarian work and global surgical education. He is Honorary Professor at UCL’s Business School for Health and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, a three-time TEDx speaker, and formerly faculty at Harvard Medical School and Singularity University.

His new book, INTELLIGENT: The Evolution of AI Transforming Healthcare, was published this year. He spoke to this conference in 2020, when we were a Zoom webinar in the middle of lockdown. He returns to chair our Innovation & Entrepreneurship session — where he has, undoubtedly, inspired a generation of doctors to innovate.

The laparoscopic trainer that costs sixty-six pence

Bishow Bekhyat Karki — MBBS, MRCS (Eng), PGCert in Health Professions Education — is a surgical trainee in the NHS. Lifelike laparoscopic practice is locked behind commercial trainers costing thousands of pounds, out of reach for junior doctors in low- and middle-income countries and, often enough, in the UK too. So he built his own.

LaApSi, the Laparoscopic Appendicectomy Simulation model, is cast in high-grade silicone from a 3D-printed anatomical mould: £12.69 for the rig, then 66 pence per model. Trainees scored it 90%, 96% and 92% for shape, size and texture against the real thing. He then threaded fine insulated wires through the mesoappendix, appendicular artery and base of the appendix, wired to a microcontroller — so the model catches cutting errors and scores the trainee automatically, for under £20 all in. It won the GlobalSurg Prize at ASiT 2024 and was published in the Journal of Medical Engineering & Technology in 2025.

His talk is the part most success stories skip: the thinking that turns a frustration on the ward into a real object. Spotting the gap, building a rough first prototype, refining it through failure, and getting it into print and into other people’s hands — with the concrete steps you can follow to take an idea of your own from a notebook sketch to published, working practice.
